(1)Childhood obesity is defined as “a child having excessive body fat which presents a risk to health,” and it is a sad fact that too many children worldwide are obese. In November 2021, the World Health Organization (WHO) published a report. The report includes sensible suggestions such as introducing health education and awareness-raising campaigns, but also asks countries to act and ban the direct advertising of junk food to children. The report claims that there is clear evidence that junk food adverts influence children’s behavior, and that there is a link between childhood obesity and this kind of advertising. The report goes on to blame the marketing industry globally for deliberately directing their messaging towards children. (2) However, the link between advertising and childhood obesity is weak and based on conclusions from research made up to 40 years ago. One example is a study conducted in Canada in 1981. In the study, eight-year-old children who were staying at a summer camp were exposed to two-weeks of food-and-drink messages on television. Researchers found that children who watched adverts for chocolate chose more chocolate and less fruit as snacks. Although this shows that there is a link between children’s food choices and television, it does not show a link between advertising and children who are overweight. (3) Children’s choices are heavily dependent on their environment. Where they grow up and behaviors that are treated as acceptable are crucial. This is a fact that people who support bans on junk food advertising like to ignore. What this means is that, if parents live unhealthy lives, then their children are much more likely to live unhealthy lives too. To tackle obesity. I believe that we need work harder get the message across about what is healthy and what is not. Attempts to solve the problem through bans are a waste of time. Education is important. School and parents play a key role in fighting obesity. The WHO’s junk food advertising bans are an unthinking solution to a problem that requires a major change to all of society.
