Private Estate rises steadily, reaching about 2.1 million hectares around 1996-1997, then continues up to about 3.5 million hectares by 2008 and stays near 3.5 through 2009. Govt Estate stays roughly flat at about 0.4-0.5 million hectares through the 1990s (crossing 0.5 million around 1997) and edges up to about 0.6 million hectares by 2009. Smallholder area rises steadily from about 0.3 million hectares in 1989, overtaking Govt Estate in the mid-1990s, and reaches about 3.2 million hectares by 2009.
